Wrinkles affect us all, though some more than others. As our skin ages we start to see fine lines appear. These can be worsened by sun damage, stress, smoking and alcohol. Botox can be used to reduce these wrinkles, especially frown lines, forehead creases and crows feet.
Botox (botulinum toxin A) is made from the bacteria that causes botulism and can be injected to block nerve activity in the muscles and cause a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Botox tends to last about 3 months. Once injected, it takes 2 weeks for the full effects to be seen.
Before carrying out any treatment we will have a 30 minute consultation to discuss what you would like to achieve and what we would recommend to obtain the best aesthetic result. This consultation is free and you are under no obligation to undergo treatment with us after your consultation.
During the consultation we will also take photographs of the treatment areas so that we can best plan your treatment and also see the final effects. A full medical history will be taken at this appointment to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for botox treatment. All aspects of your planned treatment will be discussed and you will be asked to sign a consent for procedure form.
The following people cannot receive botox treatment:
- Children under 18yrs
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- A history of neuromuscular disorders or myasthenia gravis
- Current infection of the skin including pustular acne and rosacea
- People currently taking antibiotics (these must have finished a week before treatment)
- Allergy to botulinum toxin A (though an alternate botox may be used)
- People taking Warfarin or blood thinners, or those with coagulation disorders
- People with heart valves
Side Effects & Complications
After treatment it is common that the skin may experience some redness, swelling or bruising in the injection area. This is normal and can take up to a week to settle down. If bruising is apparent at your appointment we will provide you with arnica cream to help reduce this.
For the first few days after treatment it can feel like your forehead is very heavy or you can feel the presence of the botox where it has been placed. Again this will settled after a few days and is nothing to worry about.
There is always the risk that you will be dissatisfied with the final aesthetic result. If you feel that there is any asymmetry that was not present before treatment or that an area requires more filling, you can return to have this topped up 2 weeks after your treatment.
Please note that the full effects of your botox treatment will not be seen until 2
weeks after treatment.
Other complications that may occur include:
- lid or brow ptosis or (drooping or closing of the eyelid or brow)
- redness, bruising, swelling, pain
- asymmetry of the eyebrows or overarching of the eyebrows
Please note: Over time, repeated botox use can result in longer lasting effects. However, you should never have Botox more frequently than every 3 months, as this could result in an immunity to Botox and render the treatment ineffective.
The Treatment Itself
After your initial consultation and once you are happy with your treatment plan we will book you in for your treatment. Botox treatment involves a number of very small injections into various sites around your upper face. Firstly we will mark these points on your face to ensure that the injections sites are targeting the right muscles and are symmetrical. We will then inject into these sites one at a time.
The treatment is very quick though it can be slightly uncomfortable when the injections are placed. It is likely that there will be immediate redness and swelling in the injected areas, so please be mindful of this if you are making plans for after your appointment.
It takes a few days for any effects to be noticeable and about 2 weeks for the full effects of the botox to be seen.
After treatment, please ensure that you take it easy for the rest of the day.
It is important that you follow our post operative instructions, including:
- avoid exercise for 24hrs after treatment
- avoid alcohol for the rest of the day (this can increase bruising and reduce effects)
- avoid touch or rubbing the injected areas
- try to stay upright for the next 3hrs
- try to lightly exercise the injected muscles for the next few hours
Please call if any unexpected side effects occur after your treatment.
We will have a review appointment after 2 weeks to see how well the botox has taken effect and we can also provide any necessary top ups at this time. Post-treatment photographs will also be taken to compare the result. It is important that you attend this appointment as we need to see the result of the treatment to know how best to treat you in the future.
