We offer a range of Dermal Fillers which can be injected into various sites to help reduce deep lines, define and plump lips, augment cheeks and reduce the signs of ageing. Dermal fillers are cross-linked synthetic materials made up of Hyaluronic acid (a natural component of our own skin) that are injected into the dermis layer of the skin. Fillers tend to last between 6-18 months, depending on where the fillers are placed and how deep the wrinkles are. Once injected, the effects can be seen straight away however it takes around 3 days for it to fully settle.

Before Treatment

Before carrying out any treatment we will have a 30 minute consultation to discuss what you would like to achieve and what we would recommend to obtain the best aesthetic result. This consultation is free and you are under no obligation to undergo treatment with us after your consultation.

During the consultation we will also take photographs of the treatment areas so that we can best plan your treatment and also see the final effects. A full medical history will be taken at this appointment to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for dermal fillers. All aspects of your planned treatment will be discussed and you will be asked to sign a consent for procedure form.

The following people cannot receive dermal fillers:

- Children under 18yrs

- Pregnant or breastfeeding women

- A history of neuromuscular disorders or myasthenia gravis

- Current infection of the skin including pustular acne and rosacea

- People currently taking antibiotics (these must have finished a week before treatment)

- Allergy to hyaluronic acid, lidocaine, vitamins or Gram +ve bacterial proteins

- People taking Warfarin or blood thinners, or those with coagulation disorders

- People with heart valves

Side Effects & Complications

After treatment it is common that the skin will experience some redness, swelling or bruising in the injection area. This is normal and can take up to a week to settle down. If bruising is apparent at your appointment we will provide you with arnica cream to help reduce this. Holding a cold compress against the treatment area will also help to reduce this. Small nodules may occur at the injection point which may make the skin feel lumpy. This can occur straight after treatment or may occur up to 3 months after treatment. Holding a hot compress on the area will help to reduce this and they will likely settle with time. Occasionally a granuloma (scar tissue) can form that will not reduce with time and may require steroid injections or surgical incision to remove.

Discoloration of the injection area is also a risk of this treatment. If this occurs, please contact us and we will advise you how to best treat this. Extremely rare side effects that have been reported include: necrosis of the skin, abscesses and hypersensitivity reactions after treatment.

There is always the risk that you will be dissatisfied with the final aesthetic result or there may be some asymmetry. If you feel that you would like more plumping of the areas treated then you can return in 2 weeks for further treatment, however this will carry a further cost.

The Treatment Itself

After your initial consultation and once you are happy with your treatment plan we will book you in for your treatment. Dermal fillers involve a number of very small injections into various sites around the area that is being treated. Firstly we will mark these points on your face to ensure that the injections sites are targeting the right muscles and are symmetrical. We will then inject into these sites one at a time.

The treatment is very quick though it can be uncomfortable when the injections are placed. There will be immediate redness and swelling in the injected areas, so please be mindful of this if you are making plans for after your appointment.

The effects of the fillers will be noticeable immediately, however it will likely take a few days for the redness and swelling to settle completely.

After Care

After treatment, please ensure that you take it easy for the rest of the day.

It is important that you follow our post operative instructions, including:

- avoid exercise for 24hrs after treatment

- avoid alcohol for the rest of the day (this can increase bruising and reduce effects)

- avoid touch or rubbing the injected areas

- avoid hot environments for 24hrs (including direct sunlight, saunas and hot baths)

- try to stay upright for the next 3hrs

- try to lightly exercise the injected muscles for the next few hours

Please call if any unexpected side effects occur after your treatment.

We will have a review appointment after 2 weeks to see how well the treatment has taken effect and we can also provide any further treatments at this time. Post-treatment photographs will also be taken to compare the result. It is important that you attend this appointment as we need to see the result of the treatment to know how best to treat you in the future.
